Samadhi, Bliss, and You

Yoga Sutra 3.3: tad eva artha matra nirbhasam svarupa shunyam iva samadhih

When the field of observation and the observing intelligence merge as if their own form is abolished and the total intelligence shines as the sole substance or reality, there is pure choiceless awareness without the divided identity of the observer and the observed – that is illumination.

Translation and interpretation by Swami Venkatesananda
  1. The Cup Overfloweth. We have an immense capacity for helping others, for we are as a cup that overflows or as a volcano that erupts from the earth. We give to each other with very little effort and extraordinary energy. Thinking, planning, and strategizing are accessories that are useful, but can quickly become impediments to the good effects you wish to distribute.
  2. Utilitarianism. Our utilitarian mindset is simple and leads to much unhappiness. We watch the beauty of the fish as they swim effortlessly in the pond, and we wonder how such a vision could be sold to the highest bidder.
  3. Turgid Waters. It is not possible to give powerfully to anyone or anything when your soul is burdened and muddied in the waste that is guilt, shame, and blame. In those cases, water is still there, but it is dark and turgid water in which only dark and turgid souls love to swim.
  4. Fans. Those who approve of and engage in self-shaming, guilt, and torture of various kinds easily become the friends and fans of those who sing their songs.
  5. Spark. There is a tiny light of power that shines in the dark for those who wish to free themselves from the shackles of self-doubt and fear. An art that flames that tiny apparently insignificant fire is born of the divine will. Carpe Diem. Seize the day.
  6. Ego Thought Love. Loving oneself and others is false love when it refers to loving the ego and the thoughts we have about ourselves and the others.
  7. Unity. There is not a single thought that can express the nature of who you are. That is why you must look within. You are an endless universe of stars.
  8. Eye. Notice that the phrase “looking within” does not mean for us to use the eyes that only look without.
  9. Salvation in Approval. Most people want to be good and do good deeds in order to redeem themselves. Jesus taught that salvation only comes from the divine, but the people only hear a man’s words when they listen to Jesus talking about God. So they look for men and women to approve of them.
  10. Sparks of Eternal Fire. Every person who uses social media as a gauge for their own value receives a little spark of the fire of life with every “like” they receive. But as soon as that spark appears it begins to die. The addiction is to crumbs, not to sustenance or power. It is the lifestyle of those who do not know how to create with the eternal fire. But you can learn.
  11. Eternity. The most difficult part of meditation is learning how to allow yourself to meditate. Most meditation exercises offered to the public are not really meditation, but are a preparation for meditation. We cannot meditate truly until we become the observer of our own thoughts and world. In that sense, meditation is always an attempt, and as we practice the attempt, we become more observant of the endless possibly that we are.
  12. Dragon Courage. We are not our bodies. We are not this meat bag. We are not this flesh and bones. We all have awareness or thoughts around these statements. But we usually stop there and continue on clinging to our lives. It is the rare person who continues to see what he or she actually is. Such person is possessed of great courage beyond measure. There be dragons.
  13. Animal Spirits. Each person has one or more spirit animals. Most people don’t see them. They exist in another dimension. How do you see them? Learn to clear your thoughts. Do energy work to clear your third eye. Eat clean foods. Practice meditation or yoga or music, anything that connects you to the divine.
  14. You are Divine Art. You are already an expression of the divine. Your actions and your words and your creations tell of who you are. You don’t notice this at all. You think you are surviving.
  15. Unity Consciousness. The third eye gives each of us access to the consciousness of unity or Christ Consciousness. It is where you experience the all in the one and the one of the all. Your higher consciousness leads to a universe that becomes one with all others. There is no division there; no separation. There is only observation, bliss and love. Samadhi.
  16. The World. This world that you see with your bodily senses is a very small fragment of who you are. But the world itself is interested in its own preservation through the beings that it inhabits. It will even destroy the other aspects of life in order to maintain its emperor-like dominion. We like to blame politicians or the corporations, but we need to first look at ourselves. Freedom from filth dissolves filth, just as a bird who flies high above the ant no longer sees the ant.
  17. Pity for the Hero. There is truly nothing in this world that is too big a problem for us to solve. We like to make mountains out of molehills because we yearn to be heroes or damsels in distress. But this is all coming from fear and worldly desires. We wish to become heroic or victim in order to redeem ourselves from our own self-loathing. It never works. Most drink themselves to death, play too many games, or do too many drugs, etc.
  18. Withdrawal of the senses (pratyahara) is the first step towards liberation, happiness, and bliss. It is the first step towards extracting yourself from the bondage that your thoughts have you subject to. You are your own willing slave. The keys of the cell you are in are the keys to the kingdom and they are in one of your many pockets.
  19. Agreement/Disagreement. Everything I write is something I experience directly. You can agree or not agree with what I am saying, but know that you are still in a state of polarized thought: you have not experienced anything.
  20. From Bliss to Word. Thinking is a wonderful computer-like mechanism. It makes us feel like we are experiencing something, especially if the idea feels right and sound. And when people agree with us – oh boy – we are the founders of an exquisite diamond! But the truth is that thoughts are thoughts about some buried experience that has usually been lost somewhere in some soul who is blissed out and happy in his soul, unconcerned but completely aware that his experience has been reduced to a few printed words.
  21. Awareness is a choice you can make. Take some time out for yourself. You do not need to work so hard. Relax and really look at your thoughts. Listen to how they roar and argue with each other. Listen to how you punish yourself. Listen to how you abuse yourself. Hear how never stop to listen to the air and the birds around you. Practice this every day, even for a few minutes. Be with yourself. Enjoy your own interaction with yourself. That is how you begin the process of meditation. Meet yourself. Buy yourself tea. Chat.
  22. “Love is the Law. Love under Will.” – Aleister Crowley, The Book of the Law.
  23. The Matrix is real and you are Neo; but you are not the one. So be it. So begin.
